"Did Jesus Just Happen" (The Life of Christ)
Continuation on "The Great White Throne Judgment", 11 Peter 3: 10 . " But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night' which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up." Now here is a description of the dissolution of this present heaven and present earth. They will be consumed by the fervent heat that will melt the elements. This is not speaking of the atomic bomb as many would suppose. Many have thought that this portion of Scripture is referring to the bomb. Peter is talking about the fulfillment of the curse upon the earth that was pronounced back in Geneses the third chapter. This earth, which became the scene of mans rebellion against God, is going to experience a judgment from God that will purge it and cleanse it so that it may be recreated and become the scene of the display of the eternal glory of God.
God will judge the earth and will carry out His sentence upon it when the heavens shall pass away with a great noise and the elements will melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. How is God going to dissolve the earth? This very scene which Peter has described in detail is the same scene which the Apostle John is referring to in Revelation 20: 11. I would not want to prophesy or predict, but it would seem entirely possible that the Son of God will speak one word and will bring this earth to its dissolution by atomic fission.
We know according to the book of Hebrews the first chapter that all things in this universe are upheld by the Word of His power. If Jesus Christ upholds all things by the Word of His power today, then by another Word He could cease to uphold all things and could dissolve this earth. Christ will be given authority from God to carry out God's sentence upon the earth because the earth was the scene of mans rebellion. The Son of God will speak one Word and the heavens and the earth shall be dissolved and shall be melted with fervent heat.
This is the kind of God with whom sinners will have to deal with. That doesn't sound much like a God who wink at sin and allow sin to go unpunished. He is a God of infinite power and a God of infinite holiness who must carry out and must execute the sentence that has been passed as He cursed the earth and Satan.
Next week, we will discuss, who will be at this judgement.
