"Did Jesus Just Happen" (The Life of Christ)
Continuing on the subject of building a foundation of works or deeds. The issue is serious, because if any build upon this foundation; gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay or stubble, every mans work will be made manifest. the same word found in 11 cor. 5:10 is used here, but instead of this word being translated "appear" it is translated "be made manifest" or shall be revealed. The day that shall reveal our works is the day of the Judgment Seat of Christ. The works shall be revealed by fire. The fire shall try or test every mans work to determine of what sort it is. The picture the Apostle is giving is that every believers work will be gathered together at the day of examination at the Judgment Seat of Christ. There will be a trial by fire, a discerning judgment by the holiness of God to determine what is destructible and what is indestructible. an example of this is wood and gold and certainly one could tell the difference. Why does God apple His judgment of holiness to determine what is destructible and what is indestructible? May I suggest that God is not going to judge by an external judgment. God is not going to judge by appearance. God is not going to look at a thing externally and say, that looks pretty to me, I will accept it. god is going to test the works to reveal their essential character to see whether it is gold or wood, whether it is silver or hay, whether it is precious stones or stubble.
The Apostle points out there are two results. One is given in verse 15 of 1 Cor. 3rd Ch. "If any mans work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss." Loss of what? salvation, No! the Apostle is not saying "If any man shall be burned" but "If any works shall be burned." The individual shall be saved yet so as by fire. The works of man may be consumed in a moment by fire. The man stands naked and shame-faced and dumb because all that he thought he had to offer the Lord as a thank offering has been consumed away. "He shall suffer loss, but he himself shall be saved, yet as by fire."
Continuing next week on the two or six materials in the building upon the Foundation.
