"Did Jesus Just Happen" (The Life of Christ) Christ taught some truths about the Resurrection . Concerning the the truth of the Resurrection He said, as recorded in John 5: 28,29 "Marvel not at this; for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear His voice, and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation."
These passages show us that the righteous will be resurrected into glory and will enjoy the presence of God forever, while the wicked will be raised to judgment and separation from God. It was not resurrection, the which, was the mystery, the previously unrevealed truth that is now being revealed by Paul.
What then was the mystery? the new revelation was the fact that some believers would be translated into God's presence by a new method without going through the avenue of death and resurrection. If you begin to read in Genesis and continue to read through the Old and New Testaments as far as 1 Corinthians 15, you will come to the conclusion that there is only one way a person can get into glory, and that is by physical death and then physical resurrection. There had not been the slightest hint that any individual could hope to come into God's presence apart from the process of death and resurrection.
We do have the case of Enoch and Elijah in the Old Testament, both of whom were translated without seeing physical death. But God never gave any promise following the translation of Enoch that there would come a day in which all believers, like Enoch, would be caught up. God knew all the time that He was going to do just that, but He did not take those people into His confidence and reveal His purpose to them. And when Elijah was translated and the double portion of God's Spirit fell on Elisha, even Elisha had no idea that God one day would instantly catch up every believer as Elijah had been caught away. That was a purpose of God hidden away in the recesses of His own counsels; but now God revealed through the Apostle Paul the fact that the hope of the believer is that we shall not all sleep.
Of course, in speaking of sleep, Paul is speaking of the believers death.
