The question is asked many times what is the purpose of the Church? Let me introduce you to my WIFE.
There are four events in the life of the Christian which makes the Church Christ intends for us as His children to experience.
- W- Worship. How important is Worship in the lives of individual church members? In the Book of Hebrews Chapter 10, vs.25 states " Do not forsake the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is, but, exhorting one another, and so much the more, as ye see the day of the Lord approaching. Another commandment we find in the Scriptures on many occasions, Old and New Testaments, "Thou Shall worship the Lord our God" and then in John 4:22-24, "Ye worship ye know not what. We know what we worship; for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth; for the Father seeks such to worship Him. God is a spirit, and they that worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and in Truth.
Therefore, we as Children of God are commanded to Worship Him and expected to worship Him. When do we as Christians worship Christ? Well, many suggest that Sunday Morning, Evening and maybe Wednesday evening. However the Bible teaches where two or three are gathered in the Name of Jesus Christ, there He is in their presence.
Also, we must remember that Christ loved the Church and gave Himself for it. We could share many other examples were Christ tells people to worship Him, for instance He told Satan in the Desert as Christ repeated the words from the Old Testament, "Thou shalt worship the Lord they God and Him Only.
We have the account of the Twenty Four Elders in Revelation 4: falling down before Him who sat on the Throne and worshiped Him who lives forever and they cast their crowns at His feet.
Is there any excuse for any Christian not to assemble themselves on a given time that the Local Church sets aside to worship? Many have to work, many are sick, and there are legitimate reasons. But then many Christians use the excuse that they are tired from working all week and need a day of rest ( of which they don;t rest, they either go golfing or fishing, etc) Many use family as an excuse and we could mentions hundreds of excuses which people use but they don't stand the test before a God to whom we are supposed to be committed.
I think the worse excuse I have heard is that they worship in their home on Sunday Morning and hear and view of the TV Pastors
I don't know if there any true worship experiences going on today in any of our Churches. A lot of singing, a little feel good preaching, a little food, coffee, etc shake a few hands, hear the prayers offered and then go home and feel as though you have worshiped God. One hour is enough to simply appease the heart for one week or a month. Then we have the C & E Worshipers. That is Christmas and Easter and many in our day have began to exclude Christmas.
I do know this as a Pastor, if everyone who attends Worship on Sunday Mornings, comes with the attitude of Worship, then Worship will be experienced.
Next week, I will discuss the second letter of WIFE which is the I
